Cool-jazz doyenne Anita O’Day displays many distinct approaches on this latter-day collection of highlights for Verve Records. Beyond the bold sensuality of the tropical postcard “An Occasional Man,” the torchy ballad “The Way You Look Tonight” gets transformed into jumpy, scat-kissed swing, and “Let Me Off Uptown” showcases a sassy team-up with trumpeter Roy Eldridge and the Gene Krupa Big Band. At the other end of the spectrum, O’Day nails the emotional nuances of the stripped-back “God Bless the Child” and “When Sunny Gets Blue.”
