After dropping a live album, Off-Key in Hamburg, earlier in 2020, Josh Tillman has turned his attention towards a handful of absolute legends on the aptly titled Anthem +3, in which the singer-songwriter gives classic tracks from Leonard Cohen, Link Wray, and Cat Stevens the wit and thoughtfulness one expects from the full Father John Misty experience. Anthem +3 is the first time all of Tillman's cover songs are in one collection, with the +3 all previously released in one way or another over the course of the past decade. Tillman's gorgeous rendition of Cohen's "Anthem" was recorded in mid-2020 with longtime collaborator and producer Jonathan Wilson in California. Thoughtful in its execution, Tillman's voice flourishes with Cohen's still-relevant lyrics: “There is a crack in everything/That’s how the light gets in.”
