Rising electronic duo piri & tommy take on the work of one of their biggest fans by covering Charli XCX’s “Unlock It” for their Apple Music Home Session. “We love this song, the writing is so fun, and we really wanted to take a little venture into some hyperpop vibes,” says piri. “So who better to cover? We wanted to give the track a more classic dance feel, so tommy put a breakbeat on it and some sick subs.” After adding that thump to “Unlock It,” the duo took a different tack to completely reinvent their 2022 single “on & on,” transforming a captivating collision of French house and drum ’n’ bass into beatific acoustic guitar-pop. Stripping things back for an intimate recording isn’t something that daunted them, though. “As artists who started in lockdown, it’s kind of always been this way for us,” says piri. “[2021 single] ‘soft spot’ was made across two student houses and we recorded the vocals under a duvet, so it was really nice to embrace DIY music-making again. We’ve learned how much you can achieve just from making music at home, we’ve done things we didn’t think would be possible, and we learned a lot about how to make good music.”
