This recording doesn’t take a period approach to these six sonatas, opting for a modern piano rather than a harpsichord or fortepiano. Nevertheless, it’s a stylish recording that finds Dautricourt, using vibrato quite sparingly, in fine form. There’s a pleasing intimacy to his and Juho Pohjonen’s way with these wonderfully rich and inventive chamber works. Fast movements dance along with a lively spring in their step while the more reflective moments are caressed and lifted gently into song. Dautricourt’s tone is always nicely focused and Pohjonen plays with effortless good taste, adding a complementary voice.
