The most striking thing about this live recording from 2009 is the sheer beauty of the pianism. A master Chopin player, Nelson Goerner brings his exquisite touch and wonderful sensitivity to this huge musical canvas. The duet between piano and solo cello in the third movement Andante melts the heart. But beauty doesn’t mean that the performance lacks power. Far from it: Goerner has the measure of the work’s colossal structure and he rides the surging orchestral lines with ease. Tadaaki Otaka is not only a sensitive partner, but he also draws playing of great passion from the fine NHK players.
