With 1997’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine, Eskimo Joe takes inspiration from INXS in its quest to make moody but upbeat songs that reach for the big moment. On “Beating Like a Drum,” the band’s atonal guitars coalesce in a soaring chorus, while “Sarah” is a showcase for vocalist Kavyen Temperley, who always performs as if relaying an urgent message to his countrymen. Anyone with a fondness for David Bowie or U2 will gravitate towards “Setting Sun,” in which restless beats and hallucinatory chords build into a brightly tuneful sing-along.
