Tinie’s debut is brilliantly jarring. One minute he plays the fool with jaunty chiptune songs like “Pass Out” and daft lyrics about snacks, but then he’ll get you right in the gut: “My neighbors keep getting murdered/So we sleep with the alarm on,” he sings on the spry, piano-driven “Illusion.” The music is equally thrilling, traversing pure pop, grime, and trance with equal aplomb. He matches these diffuse sounds with the perfect guest vocalists, too: Just check out Ellie Goulding’s swoony turn on folktronica cut “Wonderman.”
