Though the cover art on Red Giant’s fourth studio album spoofs KISS's 1977 LP Love Gun, the opening song, “Chopper,” finds the Cleveland party-rock titans sounding more like a tougher, irony-free Queens of the Stone Age. That’s not to say Dysfunctional Majesty lacks its own sense of humor. With song titles like “Never Touch the Lens” and “Million Point Buck,” even the most stalwart metalhead should find it refreshing that a band can rock this hard without taking itself too seriously. The latter song is an album standout, with hard-grooving riffs that recall early Grand Funk Railroad and frontman Alex Perekrest rivaling the deep growls of the guitar distortion with his own throaty rasp. “Season of the B*tch” references Donovan’s similarly named 1966 hit in title only—this song boasts a stop-start attack that gives Perekrest plenty of room to recite gory, a cappella poetry between the breaks. Closing with “Super Secret Bonus Jam,” Red Giant kicks out a six-minute cover of AC/DC’s “Let There Be Rock.”
