A terrific vehicle for the baritone Stéphane Degout, this imaginative program draws on the music of Rameau and Gluck, gathered around a Mass for the Dead, to explore the underworld. Degout takes on many of the roles created by the 18th-century French singer Henri Larrivée, and is joined by some very fine colleagues—including mellifluous tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac and mezzo Sylvie Brunet-Grupposo—along the way. Degout’s rich, firm baritone and expressive way with words mesh perfectly with Raphaël Pichon’s thrillingly energized direction of his magnificent ensemble Pygmalion.
