When it comes to guitar-based, country-influenced rock ‘n’ roll bands, Dave Coleman and The Coal Men know exactly how to do what must be done. From Coleman’s Southern twang vocals to the dual guitars that ring and chime like Telecasters with the hottest pickups installed, the band captures a sound and vibe that was long ago established by other great bands like The Del-Lords and Jason & The Scorchers. Here, guests including Will Kimbrough (Emmylou Harris), Jen Gunderman (Jayhawks), and Audley Freed (Black Crowes) serve as testimony to the band’s pedigree as the real deal. Songs such as “Last Goodbye,” “The Fall," and especially “Better Than” (with its dramatic and stormy instrumentation) show the group’s comfort with its Americana roots. Years of roadwork have quickened The Coal Men's reflexes and created a natural language between the members that translates into a sound of their own.
