Released as Sidi Touré’s hometown of Gao in northern Mali was coming under occupation from jihadi militants, Koïma shows the celebrated guitarist channeling the spirit of his ancient Songhai heritage with beautifully arranged acoustic folk. On “Ni see ay ga done,” Touré establishes an energetic calm with intricate fingerpicking over calabash rhythms and raspy horsehair fiddle. Singer Leïla Ahimidi Gobbi offers vibrant contrast with her high voice on “Aïy faadji,” while the loose licks and solos of “Ishi tanmaha” show Touré’s rocking side.
