Love (Expanded Edition) [2009 Remaster]

The Cult’s now-classic 1985 album Love has been expanded to include the band’s singles from the era as well as full-length versions of “Revolution” and “She Sells Sanctuary” (with an additional “Howling Mix” thrown in). Billy Duffy’s shimmering psychedelic-hard rock guitars, singer Ian Astbury’s commandeering rock-star lead vocals and the anthemic grind of “Nirvana,” “Big Neon Glitter,” “She Sells Sanctuary,” and the title track introduce a band who were often at odds with the “alternative” crowd of the time. The Cult referenced the indulgent splendor and decay of rock stardom and old-school rockers such as Led Zeppelin moreso than the “econo” virtues of the independent-alternative scene. Love was the band’s attempt to reconcile their Goth beginnings with the consistent lure of hard rock, churning out irresistible singles (“Rain”) alongside beefy album cuts (“Phoenix,” “Hollow Man”). There is both aura and substance to these tracks, all the more deepened with the addition of the mood pieces, “Judith,” “All Souls Avenue” and “Sunrise,” cuts that expand Love into a grand event.
