Midnight Roads & Stages Seen

Jason & The Scorchers made some great records, but they were even better live. Coming of age in the '80s when neither country-rock nor punk were in favor, the Scorchers blazed a trail that future alt-country bands from Wilco to Whiskeytown would travel. However, no band played with more speed and precision. Their cover of Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie" tore the song off its rocker, while their originals packed both punch and pathos. "Broken Whiskey Glass" takes a broken heart and stomps on it, drags it out the door, and pours it a drink. "Harvest Moon" executes sweet harmonies and blistering guitar leads. "Last Time Around" takes cow punk and adds a metal undertone. "Ocean of Doubt" features BR5-49's Donnie Herron. "Pray for Me Mama (I'm a Gypsy Now)" channels Bakersfield with an acoustic performance. "If Money Talks" breaks sound and speed barriers. Had Johnny Cash grown up in the hard rock era, he might've tried something this loud.
