Unlike the anthemic pomp and vigour of the tracks that lit up its predecessor, the soundtrack to the sequel of Ponniyin Selvan is all about ballads and atmosphere. Yet there remains a similar sense of grandeur, even in the slower, more sentimental material. This is achieved through A.R. Rahman’s trademark blend of Carnatic, Hindustani and western classical orchestration—as well as the composer’s canny selection of singers who expertly balance technical finesse with emotional heft. “Ruaa Ruaa” is a clear standout, as Shilpa Rao’s lilting vocals soar over playful strings.
