Raff vs Bitman

Raff vs Bitman

In the spirit of millennial mash-ups, Chilean hip-hop producers Latin Bitman and DJ Raff have combined forces to collaborate on a powerhouse of an album. Don’t let the “vs” in the title throw you; Raff vs Bitman is hardly a competitive DJ battle. From the playfully buoyant opener “Cruz Del Sur” to the animated house-informed closer “What’s Up,” these songs pulse and exhale with the human feel of combined beat geniuses working together. Anyone remotely familiar with either (or both) producer’s previous work will notice a departure in styles. Raff’s prior use of the bombast of looped snare hits and percussive temper-tantrum outbursts are strangely absent here. The same goes for Bitman’s love affair with bossa nova samples, which dot many of his solo recordings. Like the laws of chemistry, these two agents create a third element, one based in bottom-heavy electronic dance music. “Better Pay” moves like a combined study between two percussive scientists, working to create a cure for today’s plague of rhythmically challenged producers. Singer Francisca Valenzuela and rapper Chico Claudio appear sporadically throughout.
