After the irresistible if uncompromising “Ooouuu” made her a hitmaker, Brooklyn rapper Young M.A could easily have tried to replicate that formula or gone a far more commercial route. Instead, she doubled down on her real talk and brash rhyming to deliver 2019’s unflinchingly raw and lyrically cutting Herstory in the Making. Reprising his role as producer of that debut album’s shimmering single “BIG,” Mike Zombie handles the beats for the bulk of its brief follow-up Red Flu. While “Quarantine Party” speaks to the contemporaneous pandemic during which the EP dropped, tracks like “Dripset” and the brooding “Trap or Cap” speak to her more evergreen concerns.
