Broadening the infectious Northern Soul influences of his debut, the Yorkshireman’s second album is a bold and diverse expression of retro pop. Idris Elba’s filmic spoken-word opening track tells us—and perhaps Newman—“we are resilient, we are strong!” and that attitude informs the entire record. The life-affirming disco of “Lights Down” and “We All Get Lonely’s” showstopping ‘70s bombast raises its pulse, while Newman’s extraordinary voice—never better than on the anguished, bluesy “I’m Not Your Man”—gives the album its resilient heart.
