While the majority of 21st-century composers strike a modern note, Rodrigo Ruiz is inspired by 19th-century greats. Like the Brahms, Dvořák, and Beethoven works it evokes, Ruiz’s music is resolutely tonal and impeccably crafted. The Sonata for Violin and Piano was commissioned by violinist Kerenza Peacock, who performs it here with British pianist Huw Watkins. It’s full of energy and passion, matched by the Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano (consisting of Peacock and Watkins and the superb cellist Laura van der Heijden). The powerful, brooding, Dante-inspired “A Riveder le Stelle,” for piano and violin, takes full advantage of the latter instrument’s expressive powers and effects. This is a mesmerizing album showcasing an astonishing composing talent.
