In the opening line of “Monsters,” the dense, driving single from alt-rockers Something for Kate’s third album, Paul Dempsey sings in brooding, Eddie Vedder-esque tones about hanging upside down from an overpass. He and his cohorts—bassist Stephanie Ashworth and drummer Clint Hyndman—like playing on the edge. Echolalia finds them stepping up their game and buffing their wiry sound until it gleams—all while maintaining their signature grit and moodiness.
