Emerging in the ‘90s as a sideman to Gary Burton and Joe Henderson, the outstanding guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has gone on to put out a number of albums as a leader. He’s written many original compositions, but on Reflections, where he’s joined by Eric Revis on bass and Eric Harland on drums, he focuses on covers. The 2009 release opens with the Thelonious Monk piece that gives the album its name; this version retains the tune’s soothing quality as the players infuse it with subtle, lively touches. Two Wayne Shorter compositions, “Fall” and “Ana Maria,” stand out. On the former, steady rim hits and tumbling bass create a head-nodding chug for Rosenwinkel’s lead, while the latter track glides along on an easygoing, Brazilian-flavored groove. “East Coast Love Affair,” the longest cut here and the only Rosenwinkel original, starts off with a lovely solo guitar intro. Rosenwinkel has been performing this piece for years and the trio does a nice job of navigating its changes. Reflections closes with a short, touching version of the standard “You’ve Changed.”
