Thanks to his tough, spry riddims, Linval Thompson’s reputation as a reggae producer grew so much that by the mid-’80s he had largely retired from singing. This 1988 dancehall set thankfully puts Thompson back behind the mic, letting his sweet voice soar over the quivering drum machines of “Mercy” and splash against the delayed guitars of “Looks Like It’s Gonna Rain.” Thompson doesn’t back down from the technological advances of the era, mingling his warm vocals with the title track’s churning digi-bass with ease.
