The debut of doom-metal pioneers Sleep serves up emotionally bleak sludge, similar to the music they recorded under their previous name, Asbestosdeath. Stuffed full of phlegm-drenched screams and slowly writhing grooves, “The Suffering” and “Anguish” aren’t songs so much as violent wars of attrition. The production is big and super raw, with the piercing distortion and feedback shooting out of “Scourge” (easily the album’s most chaotic jam) feeling like they’re going to impale you.
