Skating from style to style with grace and ease, Paolo Nutini serves up an impressive sophomore release. More sophisticated than its predecessor, Sunny Side Up is also unexpectedly eclectic. From the ska-influenced opener “10/10” to the R&B gem “Coming Up Easy” to the achingly beautiful “Candy,” Nutini’s gritty, soulful Scottish brogue is warm and engaging. Folk, swing jazz, doo-wop, ballads, and skiffle are also referenced. It all works, as he's backed here by his ace six-piece band, The Vipers. Nutini’s talent and promise as a singer was evident from the start of his career. With Sunny Side Up, he proves to be a capable songwriter and bandleader as well.
