Krautrock’s most rhythmically obsessive band never sounded as out of their heads as on this 1971 album—and almost nobody since has either. “Paperhouse” opens things up, alternately riding the tide and blasting into the atmosphere, while “Bring Me Coffee or Tea” sounds downright agitated. The result remains mind-boggling as the band trances toward eternity under psychedelic mantras, and splices mistakes and rehearsals into montages, syncopated excursions, and pure noise on experiments like “Peking O” and the extended jams “Halleluhwah” and “Aumgn.”
