Rokia Traoré has always been a rebel: Malian noblewomen aren't expected to enter the music industry. But Traoré's fourth studio album is as brazen as her electric Gretsch guitar, featuring her tremulous voice singing over sparse arrangements with an intimacy that makes us feel just inches away. The tight weave of instruments both modern and traditional, particularly on the stirring "Kounandi" and the poignant "Dounia," makes for an utterly intoxicating collection.
