John McLaughlin put his stamp on jazz-rock fusion with this 1971 album, attacking his electric guitar with a combination of wildness and precision. “Vital Transformation” and “The Noonward Race” find the group in the eye of the storm, propelled by Billy Cobham’s powerhouse drumming, Jan Hammer’s inventive keyboard runs, and Jerry Goodman’s flights of fancy on violin. It’s a testament to the addictive groove of “You Know, You Know” that it’s been sampled by everyone from Mos Def to Massive Attack.
