This is the sixth release, including the two he did with Shawn Lee, by the enigmatic, and certainly fictitious, Clutchy Hopkins. (Check out his full “bio” sometime for the entire outrageous story.) As fun as the mythology is, it’s the music that matters, and The Story Teller delivers. Featuring soulful organ and keyboard grooves, funky breaks, crisp percussion, and fat beats, these 11 down-tempo instrumentals are a pleasing swirl of funk, soul-jazz, and hip-hop influences. It sounds like the instruments were recorded organically and then looped for maximum chill effect. The album’s globetrotting feel pulls a wide range of instruments into its orbit. Bongos, congas, marimba, saxophone, flute, melodica, and guitar all build on the smoky, late-night mood and overall relaxed vibe. The Story Teller is all about creating a mood and feel and on this account it succeeds brilliantly. Clutchy Hopkins may be imaginary but the music is the real deal, and that’s what counts.
