Problem is a well-respected presence on the Compton rap scene, but 2013’s Understand Me is his first high-profile release. Though it only has eight songs, the album feels complete. The fact that Problem went for quality over quantity says a lot about his character as an artist. And while the songs' dark, bass-heavy attack is a departure from the music of Problem’s G-Funk predecessors, “Understand Me” and “Let Em Die” display a sense of swing to match vintage Snoop Dogg and DJ Quik. Without resorting to gimmicks or imitation, “Like Whaaat” is an instant West Coast classic.
