Van Halen take a different songwriting tack on III, their sole album with singer Gary Cherone. Ditching their flamboyant pop hooks, the hard rockers turn arty, weaving prog intricacies and psychedelic harmonies into “Without You,” while the jagged “From Afar” finds Cherone’s gymnastic howls navigating a maze of rhythmic shifts and breakdowns. Eddie Van Halen’s guitar dominates these songs, playing dense, tangled melodies, and his rich baritone takes lead on the classical-influenced ballad “How Many Say I.”
