Vaughan Williams: Orchestral Works

Vaughan Williams: Orchestral Works

The music of Ralph (pronounced "Rafe") Vaughan Williams is the sonic distillation of an idealized pastoral England. The beloved "Lark Ascending," for instance, evokes green fields divided by hedgerows, much as "In the Fen Country" conjures the austere Lincolnshire countryside. It's hard to imagine a more representative, more generous, or more perfectly performed program of "Uncle Ralph's" music than this one, featuring the popular "Tallis Fantasia" as well as less familiar but equally rewarding pieces, all performed by some of the greatest English orchestras under the greatest English conductors, including the composer's good friend Sir Adrian Boult.
