When a supremely talented songwriter ends a relationship, we’re in for one meaty album. Sarah Blasko’s 2009 commercial and critical breakthrough is honest and raw, but never wallows in self-pity. Written while she scored a production of Hamlet and recorded in Sweden, it’s sparse and beautifully proportioned, with an emphasis on piano, acoustic instruments and jazz elements throughout. “We Won’t Run” is an especially powerful anthem, while other songs thrive on defiance. As Day Follows Night is impossible to pigeonhole, but it’s beautiful through and through.
