Scott Lucas and drummer Brian St. Clair work through eight cover tunes Lucas just so happens to like. The mix of artists is inspired, ranging from obscure to classic. The most famous track here is Pink Floyd’s “Time” and it’s played with a grinding power that’s more than halfway to Stoner Rock. The Misfits’ “Last Caress” is a super lo-fi acoustic take on the tune where Lucas’ homespun fingerpickin’ turns the song into a campfire favorite. The Jesus Lizard’s “Puss” twists into more of a chugging new-wave number than a tortured piece of over-amped angst. TV On the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” is much more accessible than you might expect. Concrete Blonde’s “Joey” is given a sturdy hard-rock drive with some eye-raising emotive vocals. Agent Orange’s “Blood Stains” is as cool as the original. Hopefully, Lucas and St. Clair will continue to mix it up with other eclectic covers in the future. Great musicians doing what they love is always a good sign.
