Before her bold, foxy persona came into full bloom in the ‘70s, Barbara Mason captivated audiences with the starry-eyed teen soul-pop of her debut. Largely self-penned and heavily autobiographical, her pendulating R&B evoked the vulnerable innocence of her formative years (“Girls Have Feelings Too”) and the heartbreaking purity of losing first loves (“Sad Sad Girl”). There are nods to her maturity here, though, in the velvet vocals and wistful orchestral balladry of the title track and the Broadway phrasing of “Misty.”
