Alan Jay Lerner

About Alan Jay Lerner

Lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner, together with composer Frederick Loewe, wrote some of the most enduring shows in the history of musical theater. Their first hit, BRIGADOON (1947), was followed by PAINT YOUR WAGON (1951) and MY FAIR LADY (1956). The Broadway cast album for the latter topped the U.S. charts, and sold over five million copies. In 1958, the pair collaborated on Vincent Minelli’s beloved GIGI. Lerner won one of the film’s nine Oscars for his screenplay, and another with Loewe for the title song. He continued to write into the early '80s, insuring his position as a towering figure of American song.
