Essential Albums
- Ariel Pink rose to indie prominence with a wry, murky take on '70s AM radio pop—like a beach party imagined by someone who had never left the house. Fleshed out by a full band and more conventional production, Before Today was the moment Pink peeked out from the underground—a cleaner but no less fascinating version of the perverted pop he’d been making on his own for years. At the album’s heart is “Round and Round,” whose melancholic, “Billie Jean”-style strut breaks through the clouds and into an after-school sing-along.

About Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
The earliest iteration of Ariel Pink's strange magic, material issued under the banner of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, tended toward particularly lo-fi production and intriguingly contradictory songwriting choices. Later albums released without the Haunted Graffiti distinction would offer a somewhat cleaner reading of Pink's fractured pop sensibilities, but the muted, otherworldly production and unexpected twists of early-2000s albums like The Doldrums (2004) and Worn Copy (2005) filtered the influence of Bowie, R. Stevie Moore, and '80s FM pop through a haze of psychedelic confusion.
