About George Lloyd

English composer George Lloyd (1913-1998) played a significant role in the return to tonality among composers in the late twentieth century. Acclaimed as a fresh young talent in the 1930s, Lloyd was badly injured when his ship sank in the Arctic during World War II. At war's end, Lloyd discovered that no one seemed interested in his compositions and turned to farming instead. Lloyd never stopped composing, and by the late '70s the concert world began to catch up to him. Lloyd composed 12 symphonies; his last work was a Requiem (1998) for Princess Diana, completed only weeks before Lloyd's own death.
