About Grace Jones

One of the all-time nightlife legends, Grace Jones is a Jamaican model, singer, and actress who became a sensation throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s thanks to her groundbreaking androgynous style and bawdy personality. Born in 1948, Jones grew up in Syracuse, New York, where her strict religious upbringing soon clashed with a feverish love of makeup, partying, and dance floors. Jones began her modeling career in her early teens and gained the favor of Yves Saint Laurent and Kenzo in Paris, while also cultivating buzz as a regular at Manhattan’s Studio 54. In 1977, she signed to Island Records and released a string of disco albums including Portfolio and Fame, later embracing New Wave, reggae, and post-punk on career-defining records Warm Leatherette (1980) and Slave To The Rythm (1985). Her uncontainable charisma spilled over to the silver screen, as she appeared alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in fantasy classic Conan the Destroyer, attained femme-fatale status in James Bond adventure A View to a Kill, and showcased her comedy chops in Boomerang alongside Eddie Murphy. Decades later, Grace Jones continued touring and turning heads—an icon eternally bathed in disco lights.
