About Hooverphonic

Belgium's Hooverphonic rode the mid-'90s trip-hop wave to become one of electro-pop's most versatile acts. Formed in 1995 by guitarist and programmer Alex Callier, keyboardist Frank Duchêne, and guitarist Raymond Geerts, the group, initially called Hoover, worked with vocalist Esther Lybeert before hiring Liesje Sadonius to sing on their 1996 debut, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular. That album included the downtempo "2Wicky," which became a cult hit because of its inclusion in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty; when that full-length came out in the United States in 1997, the band had renamed themselves to the trademark-friendly Hooverphonic. Sadonius departed and was replaced by Geike Arnaert, who sang on the band's next five albums, including 1998's string-heavy Blue Wonder Power Milk and 2007's psychedelia-tinged The President of the LSD Golf Club, before departing in 2008. After stints with vocalists Noémie Wolfs and Luka Cruysberghs, Hooverphonic brought Arnaert back into the fold in time for their 2021 appearance representing Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest.
