About Istvan Anhalt
Anhalt studied at the Budapest Academy with Kodály. After serving as assistant conductor at the Budapest Opera, he continued his education in Paris, studying piano, composition and conducting. In 1949 he moved to Canada and became a citizen there in 1955. Anhalt created an electronic music studio at McGill University and held a position there as chairman of the department of theoretical music. He became head of the music department at Queen's University in 1971. Anhalt employs abstract techniques such as tape, chanting and vocal utterances in several different languages and sometimes uses graphic notation to score his works. He is also an informed and articulate critical writer as well as an influential teacher of composition. ~ Lynn Vought
