About James Ross
In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Some children took toys to sleep with them; for me, apparently, it was a record of Smetana's The Moldau (Vltava) from Má Vlast. It seems I fell in love with the sound of the orchestra before I could even talk or read. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Gérard Souzay, Gérard Souzay Sings Ravel, Debussy, Chausson, Duparc Jansons is the most inspirational conductor I've ever heard live, including Mahler 6: this recording therefore is a reminder. Souzay is the superlative French mélodie interpreter; Furtwängler leads the world's most sublime opera to its depths. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Capriol Suite : II. Pavane (Version for Strings)” I recorded Warlock's haunting Pavane - full of sadness yet also serene - from his Capriol Suite, in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Büyükada, and island near Istanbul, with musicians from the UK, Germany and Turkey. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Hightlights including conducting Mahler's Second (Resurrection) Symphony, and performing at great venues including Birmingham's Symphony Hall, London's Royal Festival Hall and Westminster Abbey, and Ankara's new world-class CSO Hall. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Conducting more than 1,500 works still leaves so much to do - Wagner, Tristan und Isolde; Debussy, Pelléas et Mélisande; Chausson, Le Roi Arthus; Bruckner Symphonies 5, 6 & 8; Mahler 3, 5, 7, 9; Sibelius 6; Elgar 2; Shostakovich 4 and many more.
