Essential Albums
- Christian artist Jeremy Camp shows signs of becoming the sort of genre-defining figure that Steven Curtis Chapman was in the 1980s and ‘90s. Restored (2004) offered further proof of his deep-toned vocal talents and his ability to fuse personal confession with high drama as a songwriter. The album’s unifying theme is the need to find God amidst the failings of the mortal world. Relying mostly on his voice and acoustic guitar, he explores this topic in the title song, “Take You Back,” ”This Man” and others. Musically, Restored falls between the mainstream modern rock of Nickelback and the guitar-stoked testimonies of Creed, and the driving rhythms in Camp’s music are enhanced by orchestral touches on “Even Then.” Whether his songs reaffirm his spiritual commitment (“Lay Down My Pride”) or declare his desperation (“My Desire”), he remains the reverent pilgrim seeking grace. At its best, Restored achieves a kind of grandeur, all in the service of Camp’s Christ-centered vision.

About Jeremy Camp
Award-winning singer-songwriter and worship leader Jeremy Camp became a CCM radio staple with a sound that trades off between guitar-driven alt-rock and inspirational balladry. ∙ Inspired by his late wife’s struggle with terminal cancer, Camp’s 2002 breakout Stay earned a trio of Dove Awards, including one for New Artist of the Year. ∙ “Take You Back,” one of several hits from the 2004 chart-topper Restored, was named Song of the Year at the ASCAP Christian Music Awards. ∙ The Gold-certified smash “There Will Be a Day” helped 2008’s Speaking Louder Than Before score a Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. ∙ Proving his cross-genre appeal, not only did 2013’s Reckless hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart, but it also landed at No. 10 on the Top Rock Albums list. ∙ “Keep Me in the Moment,” from 2019’s The Story’s Not Over, was his tenth song to top Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart, setting a record for No. 1 entries by a solo artist on that list.
