Joe Locke

About Joe Locke

One of the most strikingly gifted jazz vibraphonists of his generation, Joe Locke cut his teeth with local bands in the north east--sitting in with visiting jazzmen, including Dizzy Gillespie and Pepper Adams--before relocating to New York in the early 1980s. He was featured on Gunther Schuller’s Mingus ‘Epitaph’ tour, which performed Charles Mingus’s epic composition at major concert halls worldwide, and visited Russia several times to play with the Igor Butman Group in the '90s. Locke also toured Japan and Europe with Eddie Henderson’s Quintet and teamed up with pianist Frank Kimbrough for SATURN'S CHILD. In addition to his touring commitments and solo career, Locke also leads the high-energy electric group Wirewalkers, playing jazz versions of R&B and pop songs alongside jazz standards.
