About Sam Evian

Recognized for a sound and songwriting style rooted in late-'60s and '70s influences including George Harrison, Levon Helm, and Shuggie Otis, Sam Evian is the alias of Sam Owens, a recording engineer, producer, and onetime singer/guitarist of indie rock's Celestial Shore. Following two albums in the early 2010s with that band, he made his Sam Evian debut in 2016 with Premium. Suffused with eight-track-era influences, the project's mellow indie rock demonstrated Owens' appreciation for vintage instruments and sounds. His third album, 2021's Time to Melt, took things even further, warping its funky soft rock while introducing sociopolitical themes inspired by the works of icons like John Coltrane and Marvin Gaye. He looked to singer/songwriters like Harry Nilsson and George Harrison as well as psychedelic and power pop for 2024's Plunge, an album about family and related themes.
