From their name alone, it's no surprise that $uicideboy$—the duo comprising cousins Ruby da Cherry and $lick $loth—are drawn to the dark side. Growing up in New Orleans, $lick was obsessed with Three 6 Mafia and Cash Money, while Ruby played in punk bands and bumped Slayer. Those early influences make perfect sense when hearing their sprawling catalog, where brash raps are shouted or growled and beats sound like the soundtrack to a slasher film. “Paris,” from 2015, pays homage to the basement-party noir of ‘90s horrorcore, while on “Meet Mr. NICEGUY,” the duo step into emo-rap territory with love-drunk, reverb-drenched melodies.
