A Gergiev discovery, Anna Netrebko has conquered the world stages—from Saint Petersburg, where she studied, to La Scala and the Met. Among the roles she has sung with success are Mozart's Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Verdi's Violetta (La traviata), Donizetti's Anna Bolena, and Lucia di Lammermoor. Her flexible, firm lyric soprano is still growing in power and richness—she sang Verdi's Lady Macbeth to great acclaim. The Russian repertoire, some of which she recorded with Gergiev conducting, finds her, not surprisingly, totally in her comfort zone. Such is her stardom that she appeared in the 2004 comedy movie Royal Engagement.
