“I’m always traveling to new places to spread this gospel of music that represents the global phenomenon of Detroit techno,” iconic producer/DJ and Planet E label head Carl Craig tells Apple Music. “But every February, I have the pleasure of presenting my All Black series, celebrating Black music in America.” Typically, that means hosting a series of performances and conversations with other groundbreaking artists. But it also means curating collections of music, such as this set of Selects—the playlist in which the world’s best DJs and producers pick their favorite tracks on any theme they wish. As such, Craig’s picks range from funk maestro James Brown, free-jazz legend Sun Ra, and rap pioneers Public Enemy to drum ’n’ bass innovators Goldie and Roni Size, J Dilla and Madlib’s Jaylib collab, and fellow modern-day techno and house producers. “It’s important to showcase the larger Black music community that has influenced Detroit techno, so these roots do not get lost,” he says. Hear all of Craig’s Selects and add any tracks you like to your library.
