Christine and the Queens is the alter ego of Paris-based artist Héloïse Letissier—a constantly self-reinventing pop unicorn who's also fluent in modern dance and theater. His 2014 breakthrough, Chaleur Humaine (rereleased in 2015 as his self-titled album), is a set of radiant electronic pop tunes in a style the artist, who announced in August 2022 that he was gendering himself in the masculine, has dubbed “freakpop.” Tracks like “iT” and “Tilted” instantly captivated curious listeners with their light atmosphere, cozy melodies, and optimistic lyrics. Yet despite the songs' fragile grace, Letissier, also known as Chris and Redcar, is just as comfortable letting loose with bass-heavy collaborators like Dâm-Funk, Tunji Ige, and Twinsmatic (the 2018 jam “Doesn't matter” is one of his most danceable tracks yet). And like his heroes David Bowie and Laurie Anderson, he uses music to inspire others to be comfortable in their own skin.
