English bassist Dave Holland was at Ronnie Scott's Club in London in the late '60s when Miles Davis happened to be in the audience and heard him play. The trumpet player then invited Holland to join his band, where he replaced Ron Carter and played on the fusion landmark Bitches Brew. After this important tenure, Holland spent a decade working mainly with Chick Corea in the experimental band Circle, and with saxophonist Anthony Braxton. In the '80s and '90s he played with Pat Metheny, Kenny Wheeler, and his own quintet. In recent years he's also been a music educator.
