David Benoit began his long career serving as musical director for vocalists like Ann-Margret and Lainie Kazan, before turning his attention to his own compositions. Starting with his acclaimed 1987 debut Freedom At Midnight, which brought his great depth of harmony and distinctive improvisational skills to a worldwide audience, he has helped define the sound of smooth jazz piano. He has also collaborated with artists like Patti Austin, Kenny Loggins, Faith Hill, The Rippertons, and his most frequent musical partner, guitarist Russ Freeman.
