’90s Spanish Pop Essentials
Apple Music
In the ’90s, Spanish pop became a global phenomenon and Spanish-language artists began to lead the way in every mainstream genre. Alejandro Sanz and Enrique Iglesias released massive crossover hits, while the club remix of “Macarena”—and its irrepressible dance moves—made regional folk duo Los del Río an international household name. At different times in the decade, flamenco, pop-rock, R&B and more converged for playful, sometimes provocative sonic dalliances, all of which paved the way for Latin and Spanish music’s further worldwide popularity.
